Take an orange and peel it in one piece. Now try to press that peel flat on a table. It will not go. Either it tears at the edges or you stretch parts of it out of shape. Nothing you do will make it lie flat and keep its original form.

This is not a problem of skill or care. It is a property of the surface. A curved surface cannot be opened onto a flat one without changing something, and the earth is a curved surface. Every map on every wall is a peel that has been forced flat. The only question is what was distorted to get it there.

The most familiar answer is the Mercator projection, drawn in the sixteenth century for a specific job. Sailors needed a map on which a fixed compass direction appeared as a straight line, so that a course could be drawn with a ruler and followed for weeks. Mercator delivered exactly that, and the method spread across the world’s shipping. The cost appears in the mathematics: to keep directions correct, the map has to stretch the surface more and more as it moves away from the middle.

The result is the map most people picture when they think of the world. Greenland appears almost as large as Africa. In reality Africa is about fourteen times larger. Nothing here is a mistake; the projection is doing exactly what it was designed to do, and the size error is the price that was agreed in advance. A map that is faithful to area will not be faithful to angle. A map that keeps shapes locally will get distances wrong. You may choose which property to protect. You may not protect them all.

This is why asking which map is correct is the wrong question. A map is not a photograph of the world; it is an argument about which features matter. The chart used at sea, the climate map and the political map in a school room are answering different questions, and each is willing to lie about something the others care about.

What makes the school room case worth attention is that the choice cannot be seen. A sailor knows why the map looks as it does. A ten-year-old reading the same sheet on a wall has no reason to suspect that the shapes have been argued over at all — and quietly takes the sizes as facts about the world.
