Most of the materials that early people worked with were solid and dark. Stone, wood and metal could be shaped, but you could not see through any of them. Glass was different. It could be heated, shaped and cooled like metal, and when it became hard again, light still passed through it. That combination — a material you can form and still see through — turned out to matter far more than anyone expected.

For centuries this mattered mostly for windows and cups. The next step came from craftsmen who were not studying light at all. They noticed that a piece of glass with a curve on it made small things look larger, and they began to grind glass into lenses for people whose eyes were failing. The purpose was practical: reading. Nobody was thinking about science.

Then somebody put two lenses in a tube, and the same simple finding opened in two directions at once. Pointed at the sky, it became a telescope, and the night sky stopped being a flat picture: there were mountains on the moon and other moons around other planets. Pointed at a drop of water, it became a microscope, and a world appeared that nobody had suspected. Neither instrument required a new material. Both required the same transparent glass, cut more carefully.

The effect on medicine was the sharpest. Before the microscope, illness had to be explained without any way of seeing what caused it, and the explanations were as good as the evidence — that is, not very good. Once bacteria could be seen, the argument changed from opinion to observation. It became possible to ask which treatment worked, and to answer.

It is easy to think of science as a set of ideas. But for a long period, what could be thought depended on what could be seen, and what could be seen depended on how well a piece of glass had been ground. The limit was not what people could think. It was a material.
