Almost everything that crosses the internet between continents travels through a cable that rests on the floor of the ocean. Not through satellites, as most people assume: satellites carry only a small share, and always more slowly.

The cables themselves are thinner than most people expect. In deep water, where nothing is likely to touch them, a cable can be about as thick as a bottle. Inside are a few pairs of glass fibres, each thinner than a hair, carrying light. Everything else is protection: layers of plastic and metal and, near the shore, an outer cover heavy enough to survive a falling anchor.

There are around five hundred of these cables, and they break more often than most people would guess: about a hundred times a year. Faults in deep water are rare. Almost all damage happens in shallow water and almost all of it is caused by people, by fishing nets pulled along the bottom or by an anchor let down in the wrong place. Repair means sending a ship, lifting the cable to the surface, cutting out the damaged part and joining in a new one.

The system survives this because it is not a set of single lines. Traffic between two points can usually take several different routes, and when one path fails the others take up the load within seconds. Users notice nothing. The places that do notice are the ones served by only one or two cables: a small island, or a country whose neighbours are not willing to carry its traffic.

That is the real weak point, and it is not a technical one. A cable can be repaired in a week. A country that depends on a single cable, or on a single neighbour’s agreement, cannot repair that in a week.
