Ask a room of a hundred people to write their names, and about ninety will pick up the pen with the right hand. The number is not a local habit. It is close to the same in every country that has been measured, and it does not seem to be changing.

It is also very old. On the walls of caves in Spain and Indonesia there are hands, made by holding a hand against the rock and blowing colour around it. Most of the hands on those walls are left hands, which means the right hand was busy doing the work. The paintings are tens of thousands of years old. Stone tools from the same period show the same pattern: the marks left by their makers suggest a right hand doing the shaping.

Why should one side win at all? Part of the answer is that the two halves of the brain do different jobs. In most people the left half controls the right hand and also handles much of language. A brain that keeps fine control and speech on the same side may work more smoothly than one that divides them, and fine control is exactly what tool use and writing demand.

That explains the majority. It does not explain the rest, and the rest is the real puzzle. If the right hand is better, why has the left-handed tenth not disappeared over so many generations? One suggestion is that being unusual is itself an advantage in a fight: an opponent who has trained against right-handed people is briefly lost against a left-handed one. Studies of sports where two people face each other directly do find more left-handed players than the population would predict.

Genes clearly matter, but they do not settle the question by themselves. Twins who share all their genes are sometimes different in this one respect, which means something else must be at work before or shortly after birth. Handedness is better described as a strong tendency than as a fixed instruction.

For a long time schools tried to correct the tenth. Children who reached for the pen with the wrong hand had it moved, and in some places they were punished for it. That practice has largely ended, and left-handed children are now left alone. The tools were not. Scissors, door handles, notebooks and many machines are still shaped for a right hand, and the ten per cent go on adjusting to a world that was not designed for them.
