Every night you close your eyes and stop thinking about the world. It feels like nothing happens. But your brain does not rest. Some parts of it work harder at night than during the day.

Scientists have studied sleep for many years. They now know that sleep helps the brain keep what you learn. During the day you take in new things: a face, a word, a road, a number. Most of it stays in your head for only a short time. At night the brain looks at these new things again. It keeps the important ones and lets the rest go.

This is why students who sleep well remember more. In one study, two groups of people learned the same list of words. The first group slept for eight hours. The second group stayed awake all night. The next morning both groups took the same test. The first group remembered far more words than the second.

Sleep also changes how you feel. After a bad night, small problems look big. You get angry more easily and it is harder to think clearly. Many people believe they can work well with four or five hours of sleep. Most of them are wrong. They only get used to feeling tired.

How much sleep do we need? For most adults, seven to nine hours is right. Children need more. But the number is not the whole story. When you sleep is important too. The body has its own clock, and it wants to sleep at about the same time every night.

There is one more thing. Light tells the body that it is day. Phone and computer screens give off light, so using them late at night makes the body think that morning has come. This is why so many people lie in bed for a long time before they fall asleep.

This is not new. Your grandmother probably said the same thing: go to bed early. What is new is that we now know why she was right.
