Everyone yawns. Babies yawn before they are born. Dogs and horses yawn too. But if you ask why, the true answer is that no one is completely sure.
For a long time people believed that we yawn because we need more air. The idea was simple: when the air in a room is bad, we yawn to take in more oxygen. It sounds right, but it is wrong. Scientists tested it. They gave people air with more oxygen in it, and then air with less. The number of yawns did not change.
A better idea today is that yawning cools the brain. The brain works best inside a small range of temperature, and it produces heat all day, like any working machine. A yawn pulls a large amount of cool air into the mouth and moves blood in the head. In tests, people yawn more when the air is cooler than the body but not too cold — which is what this idea predicts.
There is a second thing that yawning does, and this one is easier to see. Yawning passes from one person to another. If you watch someone yawn, you will probably yawn too. You may be yawning right now, simply because you are reading the word. This does not happen with every animal. It happens with humans, with dogs, and with a few animals that live in groups.
Why would a group of animals share a yawn? One answer is that it keeps the group together. If one animal is growing tired and its brain is getting hot, the others will soon be in the same state. A shared yawn may be a simple way of saying: we are all reaching the same point.
This is not settled. Yawning is one of those simple things that turn out to be hard to explain — we have been doing it since before we were born, and we are still guessing.
