In 2015 a large group of researchers tried something unusual. Instead of running new studies, they took a hundred published papers in psychology and ran them again, as closely as they could. The original papers had all appeared in respected journals. Fewer than half of the findings appeared a second time.

The result was uncomfortable, and the discussion that followed is still going on. It has a name now: the replication crisis. The word crisis is strong, but the question behind it is simple. If a finding cannot be found again, was it ever knowledge?

Part of the answer lies in what gets published. A study that finds an effect is interesting. A study that finds nothing is not, or at least it has not been treated as interesting. For decades journals preferred the first kind and quietly turned away the second. Researchers understood the rule and responded to it. The result is a published record that is not a fair sample of the work actually done: the null results stay in the drawer.

There is a second problem, and it is more technical. A researcher who measures twenty different variables will, by chance alone, find one that crosses the usual statistical threshold. If only that one is reported, the paper looks convincing while the analysis behind it was never designed to test that particular hypothesis. This is not fraud. It is what happens when careers are built on publication and nobody is asked to show the nineteen measurements that failed.

None of this means the earlier work was worthless. It means that a single result, however striking, is where an investigation begins rather than where it ends. A robust finding is one that other people, in other laboratories, with other participants, can produce again. That standard is old; what is new is the willingness to apply it in public.

The response has been practical. Some journals now accept a study on the basis of its design, before any data are collected, so that the decision to publish cannot depend on how the numbers turn out. Others require that the data and the analysis be made available to any reader who asks. Registered plans, shared data, and larger samples are slower and less exciting than a surprising headline. They are also the reason the next hundred papers will be easier to trust.
