Two things rise and fall together. The observation is easy to make and easy to publish, and it is the point at which careful reasoning most often stops. A correlation describes a pattern in the numbers. Causation is a claim about what would happen if one of those numbers were changed on purpose, and nothing in the pattern itself settles that claim.

The clearest failures involve a third variable that drives both. Sales of ice cream and the number of people swimming move together across the year, and neither produces the other; warm weather produces both. Such a factor is said to confound the comparison. The difficulty is that the confounding variable is often unmeasured, and sometimes unsuspected — a study cannot adjust for something nobody thought to record.

A second failure concerns direction. Suppose that people who sleep badly report more anxiety. Poor sleep may raise anxiety; anxiety may reverse the order and disturb sleep; most likely each feeds the other. All three accounts are plausible but untested, and the numbers are identical under every one of them. Deciding between them requires information the correlation does not contain.

The strongest available answer is to intervene rather than observe. If participants are randomly allocated to one condition or another, the groups are on average similar in every respect — including respects the researcher has not measured and cannot name. Any difference that then appears can be attributed to the intervention, because random allocation has broken the link between the condition and everything else about the participants. This is the whole force of the method, and it is a considerable force.

Many important questions, however, cannot be studied this way. Some exposures cannot be allocated without being unacceptable on ethical grounds. Some outcomes emerge only after decades. Some behaviours cannot be imposed on anyone at all, and some experiments would simply cost more than any funder would provide. In these cases observation is not a lazy substitute for an experiment; it is the only instrument available.

The response is to make observation work harder. Researchers look for a dose relationship, check whether the cause always precedes the effect, seek the same pattern in populations that differ in other ways, and ask whether a mechanism is known that would explain it. No single test settles the matter, and together they still fall short of an experiment. But the discipline of asking them is what separates a finding from a headline — and the sentence “these results do not establish causation” is not there for form. It is the most useful line in many papers.
