There are rooms built to absorb sound so completely that almost nothing comes back. They are called anechoic chambers, and their purpose is technical: engineers use them to measure what a device actually produces, without a wall anywhere adding its own contribution. To calibrate an instrument you first need a space that contributes nothing.

The construction is unusual. Every surface — walls, ceiling, and the floor beneath a hanging wire grid — is covered in deep wedges of soft material with their points facing into the room. Sound entering a wedge is reflected between its faces again and again, losing energy at each turn, and what finally emerges is too weak to notice. The room does not block noise from outside; it refuses to produce any echo of its own.

What happens to a person inside is not what most people expect. The first impression is not peace. It is the sudden arrival of sounds that were always there. A heartbeat can be clearly heard. The lungs can be heard filling and emptying. To swallow is a distinct event. Many visitors report a thin hiss inside the ears, produced by the nervous system itself. The room adds nothing and raises nothing; it simply removes the background against which these sounds are normally masked.

Many people find the experience disorienting and grow uncomfortable within minutes, and the reason is not hard to see. Balance and position are maintained partly through hearing: without reflections, the ears lose their sense of how far away the walls are. Some visitors reach for a surface that is no longer where their hearing says it should be.

This turns an assumption around. We tend to treat silence as the absence of something and noise as the presence of it, which makes silence sound like the simpler state. In practice the opposite is closer to the truth. Ordinary hearing is built on a steady background that the brain has learned to discount — traffic, wind, the low sound of a building — and every sense of how loud something is gets measured against it. Take the background away and the scale loses its zero point.

The chamber, then, is not a place where nothing can be heard. It is a place where the reference has been removed, and everything that the reference was hiding arrives at once. What we call quiet was never empty. It was merely familiar.
