Few phrases travel further from their original meaning than statistically significant. It appears in headlines, in policy documents and in advertising, and in almost every one of those settings it is read as a claim about importance. Within the discipline that produced it, the phrase makes no claim about importance at all.

The technical content is narrow. A researcher observes a difference between two groups and asks a single question: if there were in fact no difference at all, how often would a sample like this one appear by coincidence? When that probability falls below an agreed threshold, the result is labelled significant. The label states that coincidence is an uncomfortable explanation. It states nothing about how large the difference is, whether it applies outside the conditions studied, or whether anyone should act on it.

This distinction is easy to lose because the everyday sense of the word supplies exactly the meaning the technical sense keeps back. A reader who encounters “a significant improvement” is entitled to assume that something worth noticing occurred. The word had been doing two jobs, and only one of them was technical.

The gap becomes widest in very large studies. Significance depends partly on sample size, and with enough participants an extremely small difference will cross the threshold. A trial of half a million people may report a significant effect corresponding to a change too small for any individual to notice. The finding is real in the narrow sense that it is unlikely to be coincidence. It is also, in any practical sense, trivial — and both statements are true at once.

The fix is neither difficult nor controversial. Alongside the test, researchers can report the magnitude of the effect and the range of values consistent with the data. An interval that runs from a change too small to matter up to a substantial one communicates something a single label cannot: not merely that an effect is present, but how much room remains for it to be large or small. Journals increasingly require this, and the requirement costs nothing.

What survives is a modest but genuine tool. Significance testing answers the question it was designed for, which is whether a pattern can reasonably be dismissed as noise. The failure is not in the method but in the summary — in allowing a technical ruling about coincidence to be published as an ordinary sentence about importance. A reader who knows the difference has already acquired most of what is needed to read a results section honestly.
