You have forgotten most of what you have read this year. This sounds like bad news, and most people treat it that way. It is not. Forgetting is not a problem in the system. It is part of the system.

People often think of memory as a shelf. You put things on it, the shelf fills little by little, and one day there is no empty space left. If this were true, an old person could not learn anything new. But old people do learn new things, and children with almost empty shelves forget just as much. The picture is wrong.

Here is a better one. Your brain is not trying to keep everything. It is trying to keep what you are likely to need. Every day you see thousands of things: faces in the street, numbers on a door, the colour of a car. Almost all of it is useless tomorrow. A memory that is never used is a memory the brain has no reason to keep.

There is a simple study that shows how this works. Two groups of students learned the same list of words. The first group read the list again and again. The second group read it once, then closed the book and tried to guess what was on it. A week later both groups took the same exam. The second group remembered far more — even though they had spent less time looking at the words.

Why? Because reading something again is easy, and easy things feel like learning. The words on the page begin to look familiar, and that feeling is not the same as knowing them. Trying to remember without looking is harder, and it tells the brain something important: this is needed. That is the signal the system is waiting for.

So the answer to forgetting is not to read more. It is to close the book earlier than feels right and ask yourself what was in it. You will get some of it wrong. Getting it wrong is not the cost of the method. It is the method.
