A court that decides a case produces two things. One is the verdict: this party wins, that party pays, the dispute is over. The other is the judgment, a written account of why. The first settles the matter. The second does something the first cannot.

Reasons make a decision checkable. Anyone who reads them can follow the route the court took: which facts it accepted, which testimony it found unconvincing, which part of the legislation it applied and how it read the words. A decision presented without this route is simply an announcement. It may be correct, but nothing in it shows the difference between careful work and an arbitrary choice.

This matters most on appeal. A higher court is not there to hear the witnesses again; it is there to ask whether the law was applied properly. Without written reasoning it would have to guess at the steps, or repeat the whole trial. With it, the outcome can be traced back to the argument that produced it, and a single wrong step can be identified without disturbing the rest.

Written reasons also travel. A court explains itself to the parties in front of it, but the explanation is read by judges who will decide similar disputes later, and they constrain what those judges can do: a case that looks like an earlier one is expected to reach a similar result unless someone can say why it should not. This is how a precedent becomes binding, and it is also why the reasoning matters more than the result. The result applies to one dispute; the reasoning applies to every dispute that looks like it.

The cost is time. Writing takes longer than deciding, and courts everywhere carry more cases than they can hear. Systems that reduce or abandon written reasons gain speed, and they lose something that is hard to notice until it is needed: the ability to trace a decision, years later, back to the thinking behind it.
